iPhone 4: New Features But No New Carriers

You can see the real-time discussion of various iPhone and related enhancements on these blogs, which covered it live:

Below are several data points released during the Steve Jobs keynote, as well as features of the new iPhone:

  • 2M iPads sold to date
  • iPad in 10 countries (going to 19 by July); 8.5k native iPad apps, downloaded 35 million times or 17 apps per iPad
  • 5M books downloaded on iBooks, 22% ebook share in US; iBooks software being enhanced (i.e., note taking, view/read pdfs)
  • Netflix, Zynga, Guitar Hero coming to the iPhone
  • 5 billion downloads, more than $1 billion paid to developers so far

iPhone 4:

  • Glass on both sides, improved display, front-facing camera, new engineering
  • 78% of the pixels on the iPad
  • A4 processor; battery largest component inside — much longer battery life 6 – 10 hours depending on activity
  • 5 megapixel camera; several other enhancements (low light sensor, digital zoom)
  • HD video + iMovie editing on the handset
  • Video calls/chat (only via WiFi)

The new iPhone is very impressive but a significant disappointment is the the fact that at least for the immediate future AT&T in the US remains the only carrier to offer the new device. It’s unclear how long that will remain the case; however Apple is limiting its market by sticking with the embattled carrier.

Still a generous upgrade policy from AT&T and a boatload of new features should guarantee robust sales when the device becomes available on June 24, later this month.
