Broadband in Maine
Maine is the 17th most connected state in the United States, with the fastest broadband connection in the city of Eliot, boasting of an impressive download speed of around 50 Mbps courtesy of XFINITY. Effective July 1st, 2020, internet service providers will need permission before sharing any customer information to a third party, a move destined to improve data privacy. However, even with over 80 service providers, over 37,000 people lack wired internet with at least 25 Mbps. A significant 128,000 users have a single provider at their disposal, with no alternative, with 9,000 people lacking wired internet altogether at their residences. The Statewide Broadband Action Plan was developed to provide rural communities with a better high speed network. This will help more schools, homes and businesses to get connected and participate in the benefits of a wired economy.
