Service

How does Frontier Internet work?

When you sign up for Frontier’s internet service, they’ll set up the necessary equipment (like a modem and router) in your home, and you’ll pay a monthly fee for continued access to the service. The speed and reliability of your service can vary depending on the type of technology available in your area, the specific plan you choose, and other factors. You can use Frontier’s internet service to browse the web, stream video or music, play online games, download and upload files, use cloud services, and do pretty much anything else that requires an internet connection.

What kind of internet is Frontier?

Frontier Communications provides internet service to customers through three main types of technology: DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), fiber-optic, and in some areas, cable. Here’s a brief explanation of how each technology works:
  1. DSL: This technology uses the copper wires of your existing phone line to deliver internet service. It splits the line into separate channels for phone and internet usage, so you can use both at the same time without interference. While DSL speeds can be lower than other types of service, it’s widely available, even in rural areas.
  2. Fiber-optic: This technology uses thin strands of glass or plastic to transmit data as pulses of light. Fiber-optic internet can deliver much higher speeds than DSL or cable, often up to 1 Gbps or more, and it’s also very reliable because it’s less affected by issues like network congestion. However, it’s not as widely available because it requires specific infrastructure that’s expensive to install.
  3. Cable: This technology uses the same coaxial cable lines that deliver cable TV service to provide internet. Cable speeds can be much higher than DSL, and in some cases, it can approach the speeds of fiber-optic service. However, its performance can suffer from network congestion because you’re often sharing bandwidth with your neighbors.

What is Frontier Elite?

Elite refers to HomeShield Elite which is an app that you download. It is designed to protect you from hackers by providing extra security layers such as identity protection and a password manager.

What is Frontier internet with voice?

“Frontier Internet with Voice” typically refers to a bundled package offered by Frontier Communications that includes both internet service and home telephone service. Here’s a breakdown:
  • Frontier Internet: This is the broadband service provided by Frontier Communications. Depending on your location, this can be DSL, fiber-optic (like FiOS), or in some areas, cable internet. The speed and type of connection vary based on the infrastructure in your area.
  • Voice (or home telephone service): This is Frontier’s traditional landline telephone service, which may offer features like unlimited local and long-distance calling, voicemail, caller ID, and more.
Bundling services like this can often provide cost savings for the customer. Instead of getting separate bills for internet and phone services, customers receive one consolidated bill. Additionally, bundling might come with promotional deals or discounts. However, as with all bundled services, it’s essential to understand the terms and conditions, any promotional periods and what the costs will be once any promotional rates end.

Does Frontier require a phone line?

Frontier Communications offers several types of internet services, and whether a phone line is required depends on the type of service you choose:
  • DSL (Digital Subscriber Line): Yes, this service does use the existing copper phone lines to deliver internet service. However, you don’t necessarily need to have an active traditional phone (landline) service to use DSL. The phone line is simply the medium through which the internet data travels.
  • Fiber-optic (like Frontier’s FiOS service): No, this service doesn’t require a traditional phone line. Fiber-optic technology uses thin strands of glass or plastic to transmit data as pulses of light.
  • Cable: If Frontier offers cable internet in certain areas, cable internet typically doesn’t require a phone line either. Instead, it uses the same coaxial cable lines that deliver cable TV service.
So, while their DSL service requires a phone line for transmission, you don’t necessarily need to have a traditional telephone service with Frontier to get internet. Always consult with Frontier directly to understand the specific requirements and offerings in your area, as these details might vary based on location and package offerings.

Usage

Is Frontier good for gaming?

Fiber-optic internet (such as Frontier’s FiOS service where available) is generally the best for gaming due to its high speed and reliability. Online gaming typically requires stable internet with low latency more than it requires extremely high download speeds. A consistent connection with a speed of 10-25 Mbps is often enough for most online gaming, but it can depend on the specific game and whether you’re doing other bandwidth-heavy activities at the same time (like streaming video). Frontier’s fiber-optic service can provide much higher speeds, often up to 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps), which can be advantageous for downloading large game files or updates, streaming gameplay, or for households with multiple people gaming or streaming video simultaneously. However, keep in mind that the actual performance can vary based on several factors, including your specific location, network congestion, the quality of your home network setup, and others. It’s recommended to check the speed and service quality in your specific area before deciding on a provider or a plan.

Agreement FAQs

Does Frontier have a contract?

No, there is no contract in terms of length of time, but you will have to agree to the terms and services that dictate other fees.

Does Frontier have a cancellation fee?

Frontier Communications’ cancellation policy could vary based on the type of service and the terms of the agreement you signed. Some of their services come with a contract, usually of one or two years in length. If you agreed to a term contract and choose to cancel the service before the end of that term, you may be subject to an Early Termination Fee (ETF). However, some of Frontier’s service plans are month-to-month and do not involve a long-term commitment, so these plans typically do not have an early termination fee. However, the following conditions will always apply, based on their published Terms & Conditions. If you decide to cancel any Service before any equipment has been delivered or the Service has been installed, you’ll need to pay a cancellation fee. This fee equals the Non-Recurring Charge (NRC) and one month of the Monthly Recurring Charge (MRC) for the Service. In addition, you’ll also need to cover any total costs and expenses that Frontier has incurred while setting up the Service prior to receiving your cancellation notice, including potential equipment restocking fees. Unless the law states otherwise, you can end your Service effective on the final day of your Frontier billing cycle for all related Services. You’ll be responsible for any charges incurred up until the date of termination. If you end the Service, or if Frontier ends the Service because you’ve not met the agreed terms, unless there’s a written provision stating otherwise, you’ll need to immediately pay Frontier a termination charge. This charge will be equal to all unpaid amounts related to the terminated Service up to the date of termination. In addition, it will also include the MRC and all associated taxes and surcharges, multiplied by the number of months left in your Service Term, if any. Read our guide to the Frontier Terms of Service.

Does Frontier have hidden fees?

Frontier may also apply certain surcharges, administrative or reactivation fees, a fee for paper billing, or other cost recovery assessments. Interest on late payments, returned payment fees, Early Termination Fees (ETFs), equipment charges, and other one-time or recurring charges could also be present on your invoice. You agree to pay these charges by the due date specified on your monthly bill.
